in regards to riordan and the pjo fanbase—

i want to preface with the fact that my voice is not of much importance here and i will link posts down below that should be read, amplified, and listened to, and thankfully, have been already. but consider this an open letter concerning what has taken place in the fanbase this past week. one week. seven days. eight since he initially made the tweets. 

riordan published two articles recently, both of which read as mock explanations of serious character issues concerning samirah and piper, that had been brought to him time and time again by fans of color. the articles are truly disappointing to read, and even worse hurtful to accept as a means of “apology,” when really they offer nothing of substance; simply the bells and whistles of avoidance language. the reaction to these articles has varied, but to the people who take it as acceptable i implore you to read what fans of color have written. the diverse “representation” riordan prides himself on isn’t good; you can’t explain away bad, harmful decisions; it’s not going anywhere. fans of color have been discussing this for years and you can either choose to listen to them or through your lot in with an author who clearly, clearly knows the outcome of his actions. he wouldn’t have taken an “hiatus” otherwise

further more though, these articles did not seem to be the worst thing to happen this past week, and this series of events is the driving reason behind this post. after fans of color rightfully expressed their frustration, anger, and upset, there was a wave of anonymous (or not) senders that sent graphic, scarring images into the inbox’s of said fans of color, many of them being minors. these attacks were (or still are?) clearly racially-charged and, if i’m not mistaken, a literal hate crime. i hope they have since stopped.

i’ve been around on this site awhile. the internet, too. i am not going to act as if this is a shock. the pjo fanbase has had problems from day one, ranging from harmless to severe. but i have never been more disgusted, sickened to my core. trying to speak directly to these attackers through this post will do no good, but if this happens to come across their dash i need them to know they are vile, evil, racist human beings. and with each passing day i worry more about the lasting effect this will have on the bloggers who were effected; i am so sorry you were put through this. i am sorry this site doesn’t function properly enough to get you immediate justice. and even though many posts have circulated concerning the feelings of fans of color and how this has been effecting them, i will never be able to fully understand the impact that this past week has had on them. please lend your support to them whenever and however you can. 

it takes a lot to render me speechless, but gosh did this past week accomplish it. fans of color have had to deactivate, distance themselves, shut their inbox’s, all out of retaliation for valid criticism’s they made of rick riordan’s “representation” and his shitty articles that did not include apology, only excessive justification for his uneducated decisions. i only ask now that people continue to listen to fans of color, because as is the way of social media, things tend to fade, and quickly. criticism in the fanbase has thankfully always remained a constant, but the events that have transpired this past week cannot be forgotten. 

please continue to turn your attention to fans of color and actively listen to what they are saying. riordan is no saint. he can handle himself. the people of color in this fanbase who have been hurt repeatedly are the ones in need of your support. and again, especially to those directly effected, i am so sorry this has happened.
