I think the thing that most gets me about the Lonely is that it is the only depiction of depression I’ve ever seen that focuses on how paradoxically good it can feel. Leaning into the apathy feels to me like putting ice on an injury: it hurts if you do it long-term, of course, but for the first few moments it’s a rush of relief.

Martin wanted to stay there, but used an incredible amount of strength in order to say “No, this is not true. This is not me. I would rather face the pain and feel again than stay numb like this forever”, and god it feels so good and so encouraging to hear that

“It’s comforting… But its not a good kind of comfort” was such a good way to put this.
